Firecracker Run set for Lakewood, NY

Times Observer File Photo Runners leave the starting line at the 2019 Firecracker Run in Lakewood, New York.

LAKEWOOD, N.Y. — The Lakewood YMCA is currently holding online registrations for its Fourth of July Firecracker Run.

This run has been part of the Lakewood community for many years.

This year’s in-person run has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but thanks to technology and some of the run’s sponsors, the Lakewood YMCA was able to save the race.

Although there will be many changes this year, the course will remain the same. Family members and supporters will still be able to keep track of runners from afar and root them on.

The race will be held on Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5. It will still consist of the 10K run, 2-mile run and 2-mile walk. There are three easy steps to participate:

¯ Sign up online at https://runsignup.com/Race/NY/Lakewood/LakewoodYFirecracker10K2MileRun;

¯ Download the RaceJoy app;

¯ Show up to the designated start in the 24-48-hour time period, push start and begin running.

The GPS technology will give runners directions, mile splits, projected finish time and encouragement.

Supporters can track runner’s progress and send messages. At the finish, runners will receive their time and place on a live leaderboard. Runners are also able to submit a time via text message or through their RunSignUp profile.

Prizes will be awarded to the first three overall male and female finishers. Age group awards will also be given to the top three finishers in each division.

The cost of the race is $10 without a T-shirt or $20 with a T-shirt.

Sponsors include LakeShore Paving, M&T Bank, Orion Tradesmen, Western NY Urology Associates LLC, Jamestown Kitchen & Bath and Mr. & Mrs. Brian Mallory.
