ACS Golf Championship set for Aug. 5

WARREN — Warren County’s 43rd annual American Cancer Society Men’s Golf Championship, the second oldest for the ACS mission in the country, will be held at Conewango Valley Country Club on Aug. 5, according to event founder and co-chairman John Zawacki.

The benefit will begin at 11:15 a.m. with registration and lunch, followed by a 12:45 shotgun start, and an 18-hole play-your-own-ball format. Prizes will be awarded in gross, net, Callaway and senior divisions, followed by a sit-down steak dinner and brief program. The benefit will be conducted according to state guidelines regarding COVID-19, including social distancing, for a “green” county.

The field will be limited to 31 foursomes on a first-come, first-serve basis and it’s expected to sell out. Foursome entries can be made by calling Zawacki at 814-688-9876 and guaranteed by receipt of a non-refundable check made out to the American Cancer Society of a $400 donation. Many sponsorship opportunities are also available and welcomed to support the critical mission of the ACS, which is recognizing cancer patients are among the most vulnerable to COVID-19 given that their immune systems have been compromised through their cancer treatments.

Co-chairman John Papalia emphasized the increased need this year as many traditional ACS fundraising events have had to be canceled due to the pandemic, severely impacting the society’s budget. Therefore, the tournament’s theme is appropriate — “Cancer hasn’t stopped, so neither have we.”
