Soccer Showcase postponed; 9 WAHS players on roster

The 4th annual New York/Pennsylvania Corporate Cup Soccer Showcase scheduled for May 17 has been postponed due to the COVID pandemic, but not cancelled to be clear.

“It’s safe to say that this year’s showcase games will not be played on May 17th as originally scheduled,” said Kris Linderman, organizer, on Thursday. “We are NOT cancelling. Just POSTPONING to June or even as far as July. We have dates in both June and July that we can utilize Pitt-Bradford. A few things have to happen first. The first being of course that things open back up in the coming weeks or months.”

While two Warren Area High School soccer players played last year, there are nine — six boys and three girls — on the Pennsylvania rosters for this year — when and if the event takes place.

“To be totally honest, I envision a scenario where we are able to play the games at some point with just the players and no spectators,” said Linderman. “But we will make that decision as the next couple weeks pass and we have more information. We will of course televise the games on our Facebook page so that people can watch it. The most difficult part is the waiting as I’m sure you know.

“I do want to thank each of you for sticking with us,” he said to players and coaches in an email. “We plan to hold the event but it won’t be like in the past years where there are 1,000 people there to watch and youth players join you in the walkout. We will definitely include what we can in the event. The Facebook page that we will utilize to broadcast the games is Mazza the Corporate Cup.

“To view the games, a person would just have to like the page. A media day event will be determined also as the following weeks develop. Worst case scenario, we give the players their kits through the mail, drop off at a location or even do it on game day. For the player photo for the program, we can have each player send us a head shot and include that in the program. We will also make that determination in the following weeks.”

In addition to Warren boys head coach Denny Flatt and Warren girls head coach Jeremy Bickling being assistant coaches for the games, respectively, Warren’s Jack Darling, John Page, Ryon Flatt, Zane Anderson, Wesley Kiehl, and Ian Darling are listed on the Pennsylvania boys’ roster, and Warren’s Madeline Fadale, Georgie Bickling, and Kyleigh Wilson on the PA girls’ roster. Wilson also played in last year’s event.
