Legion baseball latest victim of COVID-19

In addition to winter championships and spring high school sports, the Pennsylvania Department of the American Legion said on Monday there will be no legion baseball in 2020. That includes all of the local legion baseball leagues and the state regional and championship tournaments. The announcement also said that any baseball action that uses the legion name or logo is not authorized.

“Gentlemen,

The Department of Pennsylvania American Legion Baseball program for 2020 is cancelled,” in a statement from Robert E. John, Pennsylvania American Legion Department Commander. “My decisions to cancel State Police Youth Camp, Keystone Boys State and Baseball were difficult but necessary in this COVID-19 environment. At this moment, our Department Executive Committee members are in the process of voting on a Resolution to cancel our Department Convention scheduled for July 16-19, 2020 in Lancaster. It appears this Resolution will be approved.

“All Department of Pennsylvania programs and activities are cancelled until further notice.

“I sympathize with all who are involved in our Baseball program across the state but I will not gamble with the health and/or safety of our players, coaches, umpires, staff, their families and fans of the sport.

“Use of The American Legion name, emblem and baseball logo are no longer authorized in Pennsylvania for the remainder of the 2020 calendar year.”
