Lanzel named Assistant Coach of the Year

Aaron Lanzel

Navy track and field assistant coach and 1999 Eisenhower High School graduate Aaron Lanzel was selected as the Mid-Atlantic Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year for the 2020 indoor track and field season. For Lanzel, who is in his second year as the distance coach at Navy, it is his first assistant coach of the year accolade.

“It is an honor to work with the highest quality men running at Navy,” Lanzel stated. “We get to push each other to success on many levels. I am very grateful to mentor and coach them.”

Lanzel led a near sweep at the Patriot League Championships, as his runner won the 800m (Ashwin Briggs), 3000m (Jake Brophy), 5000m (Jake Brophy), 4x800m relay (John Finnegan, Sean Casey, David Nelsen, Nicholas Williams), and distance medley relay (Chase Rivera, Nicholas Williams, Sean Casey, Ashwin Briggs) while taking second in the mile (Chase Rivera).

In addition, he coached the Midshipmen’s first runner, Jake Brophy, to break the sub-4 barrier in the mile, recording a school record time of 3:59.98.

A 2003 USNA graduate with a degree in electrical engineering, Lanzel lives in Annapolis with his wife Ashley and daughter Aletheia.
