Dragon matmen close season at regionals

ALTOONA, Pa. – The season came to an end for nine Warren Dragons at the Northwest Region Class 3A championships on Saturday at the Altoona High School Fieldhouse.

Josh Letko (113), Ryan Madigan (126) and Alex Anderson (145) all won their first matches on Friday before falling in the quarterfinals.

On Saturday, the freshman Letko opened his day with am 8-4 decision over Cranberry’s Austin Shoup to stay alive. His season came to an end in his next match via a second-period fall against Hollidaysburg’s Colin Sminlak. He finished his season with 13 wins.

Anderson, meanwhile, also won his opening match on Saturday, getting an impressive 12-0 major decision against Nicholas Burkey of Hollidaysburg. In his next match, he was tech falled in 3:37 by St. Marys’ Tylor Herzing. The senior finished the season at 20-13 and 69 wins in his Dragon career.

Madigan (25-10), meanwhile, was pinned by Central Mountain’s Taylor Weaver in his first match on Saturday, bringing his Dragons career to a close, matching Anderson with 69 career wins.

Kyle Swick (152), Joey Arnold (160), Zack Zinger (170), Brandon Daugharthy (182), Luke Becker (195) and Jake Hayes (220), all lost their first matches on both Friday and Saturday.

Arnold met a tough fate, dropping his first consolation match 3-2 against Mifflin County’s Trey Shoemaker. Nevertheless, he finished the season at 27-7 and will go into his senior season with plenty of momentum.
