Beyer honored as one of top swimmers in Region 3
Warren swimmer Katie Beyer added another accolade to her already impressive sophomore season when she was named to the Region 3 All-Star team Monday.
Beyer earned second-team honors in both the 100 and 200 freestyle. The selection caps a season in which Beyer set three new school records, won a district title and qualified for states.
At the Dragons’ first home meet of the season in December, Beyer took down the school’s 23-year-old record in the 100 free. She topped Kristen Handkammer’s mark of 1:00.95, set in 1996, by 0.4 seconds (1:00.54).
When Warren came back home for the first time in 2020, Beyer was at it again. This time she passed Ann Jablonowski’s 1993 mark in the 100 backstroke. Beyer topped Jablonowski’s time of 1:08.22 by nearly a full second with a 1:07.57.
“Every time she swims it seems like she’s getting faster and stronger,” Warren coach, and Katie’s father, Russ Beyer said at the time. “She’s really determined and works hard. When you look back at it, those names are etched in Warren’s history and she’s putting her name right up there with them. That’s quite an accomplishment.”
Beyer passed one more of the names etched in Warren lore, and she did it at the most opportune moment.
Swimming in the 200 freestyle at the District 10 Class 3A meet at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, Beyer blistered to a 1:57.57 finish. The time gave her district gold, a trip to states and broke the mark set by Katie Hunter in 1996. Not only did she win a district title with a record-setting performance, she was more than five seconds in front of second place.
Beyer also took second in the 100 free and was on a pair of relay teams (200 medley, 400 free) that finished third at districts.
