D-10 releases basketball playoff brackets

The wait is over.

Well, mostly. District 10 released the brackets for boys and girls basketball playoffs Wednesday and three Warren County teams now know their path to a district title. Two of the three, however, will have to wait a few days more to find out who their first opponent will be.

The Youngsville boys, coming off their best regular season win total in 25 years, will host a first round game in the Class 2A tournament Friday. The Eagles will welcome Region 2 foe Mercer for a 7 p.m. tip. The Mustangs finished seventh in their region with a 6-16 overall record. Youngsville enters the contest with a 17-5 overall mark and as the second seed out of Region 3. The winner will take on Rocky Grove, 14-8 overall and third in Region 2, in the quarterfinals Friday, Feb. 21 at a time and location to be determined. The Orioles received a first round bye due to Eisenhower opting out.

Warren’s boys locked up the No. 2 seed out of Region 6 and a firsr round bye in the Class 4A tournament after a thrilling overtime win over Corry Tuesday. The Dragons will take on the winner of Conneaut and Oil City in the quarterfinals. The Eagles finished third in Region 5 with an 8-14 overall mark, while the Oilers were sixth in Region 6 at 9-13. Their first round game will be at Conneaut Friday. The Dragons swept the Oilers (47-37 win at Oil City and 68-61 victory at home) during the regular season and did not meet the Eagles.

The Warren girls secured the top seed out of Region 6 in the Class 5A tournament. The Dragons will open their district title defense with a quarterfinal game Saturday, Feb. 22, at a site and time to be determined. Warren will face the winner of Saturday’s first round game between Meadville and Franklin. Both teams come out of Region 5. The Bulldogs finished fourth with an overall record of 8-14, while the Knights were fifth with a 7-15 mark. The first round game will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Cochranton High School. Warren topped Meadville, 52-32, at the Joseph A. Massa Gymnasium Jan. 25.
