Youngsville falls to unbeaten Corry

Youngsville’s Collin Clough tries to put Corry’s Hunter Savitz’s shoulders to the mat during the first period of their 138-pound match at Youngsville High School, Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020. Clough decked Savitz, but the Beavers came away with a 72-12 win over the Eagles.

Corry picked up in 2020 right where it left off in 2019, with a dominating

Region 3 win.

The Beavers won eight of the 10 contested matches at Youngsville by pinfall en route to a 72-12 win over the Eagles Thursday. Corry had outscored Region 3 opponents, 161-54 coming into the match.

Youngsville picked up a pair of pins from Jake DeSimone and Collin Clough. Thursday marked the first time DeSimone had a match during an Eagles dual meet this season.

“Jake realizes (the forfeits are) part of the game,” Youngsville coach Paul Clough said. “He really grew into being a heavyweight this year.”

Corry opened with five straight pins. Dylan Gourley topped Michael Crane at 160, Austin Sacchetti decked Damon Reese at 170, Matt Petrilla put away Sawyer Lawson at 182, Hayden Linkerhof downed Deven Morris at 195 and Shawn Proctor defeated Alan McAlister at 220.

Youngsville’s Jake DeSimone sizes up Corry’s Xavier Reyda during the first period of their 285-pound match at Youngsville High School, Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020. DeSimone picked up a pinfall victory, but the Beavers topped the Eagles, 72-12.

DeSimone squared off against Xavier Reyda at 285. The big heavyweights locked up and Reyda used a nice leverage move to come down on top of DeSimone for a takedown and near fall. DeSimone fought off his back, and when Reyda tried to turn DeSimone again, DeSimone made his move.

He hooked Reyda’s head, flipped him to his back and cinched in for the pinfall victory.

Corry took four of the next five matches via forfeit, and Derek Hurd won the fifth at 126 via pinfall over Logan McDonald.

Collin Clough picked up his win over Hunter Savitz at 138. Clough swooped in for an early takedown, but gave up an escape for a 2-1 advantage. Clough took down Savitz again, but this time he got Savitz on his back and cinched in for a pinning combination at 1:46.

“He wrestled his match,” Paul Clough said. “He’s been a little gun shy, but controlled the pace tonight.”

Nick Lapinksi (145) and Brady Steele (152) closed out the match win pins over Colton Garris and Caden McCune, respectively.

“We’ve still got 14 guys,” Paul Clough said. “That’s double what we had at this time last year. This is a young group and they’re enjoying the process.”

The Eagles will next take the mat at Saegertown Wednesday.
