Warren grapplers fall at Corry

CORRY, Pa. — As the season has worn on, there’s been a rumbling that Corry might challenge perennial power Reynolds for the Class 2A District 10, and possibly state, wrestling crown this season.

The Beavers added to that noise with a dominating 62-12 win over visiting Class 3A Warren Tuesday. The Beavers won eight matches by pin, plus another via tech fall. The Dragons picked up three individual victories on the night.

“Hat’s off to a very good Corry team,” Warren coach Paul Streich said. “They are solid throughout the lineup.”

Corry opened the match with a pair of pins. Shawn Proctor decked Easton Hultberg at 220 and Xavier Reyda topped Tristan Dolan at 285. Lucas Munsee won a tech fall over Christian Papalia at 106 and Kayden Reyda picked up a pinfall win over Josh Letko at 113. Damion Kinney won via forfeit at 120.

Ryan Madigan got the Dragons on the board at 126. Madigan and Derek Hurd were scoreless heading to the third period. Hurd had the choice and took the down position. He quickly escaped for a 1-0 lead. Madigan reversed a shot into a takedown and nearfall for a 4-1 advantage. Hurd escaped again, but couldn’t get a shot in as time expired and Madigan emerged with a 4-2 win.

Lucas Peterson got those points back plus bonus when he pinned Nick Pennucci at 132. Trey Proper earned a hard-fought 9-5 win over Alex Anderson at 138. Nick Lapinski pineed Joe Letko at 145 and Brady Steele did the same with Landon Douvlos at 152.

Joey Arnold had to work extra hard for Warren’s second win of the night. After a scoreless first, Dylan Gourley got an escape point in the second to take a 1-0 lead into the third period of their 160-pound bout. Arnold escaped in the third and the grapplers were tied at the end of six minutes. Arnold wasted little time getting a takedown in the overtime for a 3-1 win.

Zack Zinger needed just 1:15 to get Warren’s only pinfall of the match, over Austin Sacchetti at 170.

Matt Petrilla and Hayden Linkerhof closed the match with pins for the Beavers over Brandon Daurgharthy and Luke Becker, respectively.

“We are battling the injury and illness bugs and it showed tonight,” Streich said. “Several guys were the next man up and we appreciate their efforts. Hopefully, we can get healthy quick.”
