Warren girls fall to Villa Maria

Warren’s Riley Childress (14) puts a shot up past the outstretched arm of Villa Maria’s Margaret Constable (12) during the second quarter.

The last time Villa Maria and Warren squared off at the Joseph A. Massa gymnasium, the Lady Dragons made some history. Not only did the Warren program get a new all-time leading scorer, but the Dragons put an end to the Victors’ 48-game District 10 winning streak.

Villa got a measure of revenge Monday night when the Victors returned to Warren Area High School and came away with a 46-30 win.

“They limit you in shots and rebound well,” Warren coach Lisa LaVan said. “You’re not going to get many second-chance points against them.”

The Victors (7-4 overall, 3-0 Region 6) raced out to a big lead in the first quarter and held the Dragons (8-5, 2-1) to just three points, a Cara Munksgard field goal and Emma Ruhlman free throw.

Warren started to get some things going offensively in the second quarter, with Riley Childress putting in eight points in the frame. Villa was able to respond and took a 34-13 lead into the half.

Warren's Carly Beers (5) goes in for a layup during the second quarter of a game against Villa Maria at Warren Area High School, Monday, Jan. 13, 2020. The Victors topped the Dragons, 46-30.

The Dragons came out strong defensively in the second half and limited the Victors to just three points in the third quarter. Ruhlman got her first field goal of the game early in the frame, as did Teagan Paris. Riley Childress added another and both Ruhlman and Taylor Childress hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 37-23.

“We challenged them and they stepped up,” LaVan said. “This was a tough game.”

The Victors did just enough offensively in the fourth to keep the Dragons from getting any closer and held on for the win.

“We knew they were going to try to shut down Riley and Emma and others would need to step up,” LaVan said. “They played hard. Our starters gave everything they had and Carly (Beers), Ella (Ordiway) and Cara battled. When they came in we didn’t skip a beat.”

Rachel Majewski led the Victors with 14 points, 12 coming on 3-pointers.

Riley Childress paced the Dragons with 14 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. Ruhlman finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

Warren travels to Harbor Creek Thursday for a Region 6 contest.

“This is the game we needed,” LaVan said. “This is a great tune-up for Harbor Creek. I expect we’ll come out ready to go.”
