Warren gets region win at Corry

CORRY, Pa. –Early in the season, Warren dropped a pair of Region 6 games after squandering a fourth quarter lead.

Corry came back from a 13-point halftime deficit to take a brief lead, but this time Warren battled back and picked up a huge, 62-55, Region 6 road win Friday. The win puts the Dragons in a tie with Corry and General McLane for second place, each only a game back of the region-leader Titusville.

“We started out strong,” Warren coach Jeff Berdine said. “We had a very good first half, got out on top. We played solid defense in the first half and made them work. It was a good first half against a good team.”

The Beavers (10-4 overall, 4-2 Region 6) started the second half strong as they forced Warren (8-5, 4-2) into six turnovers on the Dragons first eight possessions of the half. Corry came all the way back to take a 40-39 lead, but Ben Berdine scored on the next three possessions to stretch the lead to six and Payton Barnes knocked down a pair of free throws to put Warren ahead, 48-40.

“It was gut check time,” coach Berdine said. “We went from being up 13 to down one. You have to dig deep there and I’m proud of the kids because we dug deep on this one.”

Logan Joncas shot Corry back into it in the third with three 3-pointers, then he hit two more in the fourth. Joncas scored 18 of the Beavers’ 30 second half points. His performance got the capacity crowd back in the game as well.

“That’s the most fans I’ve seen in Corry since I started coaching,” Berdine said. “They were out to support their team.”

Given the situation, and the early season losses to General McLane and Titusville, the importance of this win didn’t go unnoticed.

“That’s huge on the road,” Berdine said. “Now they have to come to Warren for the last region game of the season and beat us to win the region.”

Joncas had a game-high 23 points, while Lucas Nichols added 12 in the loss.

Ben Berdine paced the Dragons with 22 points. Barnes had 15 points and four rebounds and Thomas Bablak had nine points and eight rebounds.

The Dragons travel to Titusville Tuesday with a chance to not only avenge that earlier loss, but move into a tie for first place in the region.

“Every game we’ve played has been close,” Berdine said. “But now the kids understand when they want to, they can play with anyone in the region.”
