Sweet revenge: Dragon wrestlers get big win over Cranberry

Warren’s Joey Arnold battles Cranberry’s Christian Miller during their 160-pound match at Warren Area High School on Wednesday. Arnold went on to a 14-3 major decision victory, as the Dragons earned a 47-28 win.

A 48-33 loss to Cranberry in the championship match at the Tom Carr Duals last month left a bad taste in the mouths of the Warren Dragons.

That was all erased on Wednesday.

The Dragons took bumped several wrestlers up weight classes and it worked to perfection, as they got their revenge on the visiting Berries, 47-28.

“It was very gratifying,” said Warren coach Paul Streich. “We felt like we were the better team the last time we wrestled at the Tom Carr Duals and it kind of left a sour taste in the boys’ mouths. We’ve been working toward this one. I don’t want to say we had it circled but I know some of them did and we came out and had a great match.”

One of the most important moments of the match happened right off the bat at 113, and it wasn’t even a Dragon win.

Young Josh Letko face Cranberry standout Austin Shoup. After falling behind 10-0 after the second period and 13-0 in the third, Letko succeeded in not allowing Shoup the tech fall. Not only was it an improvement over the last time they met (a first period pin by Shoup), it took value bonus points away from Cranberry.

“Josh Letko put together a great match to start us out,” Streich said. “Holding them to four points there was really important. That set the tone for us.”

The Dragons yieled a 16-0 edge for the visitors to start, but a Nick Pennucci first-period fall started a string of eight consecutive Dragon victories.

Ryan Madgian (138), Alex Anderson (152) and Jamo Douvlos (195) all bumped up a weight class and all three were victorious, by major decision, decision and fall.

Douvlos wasn’t in the lineup the last time the two teams met due to injury, but he certainly made a big difference in this one.

“We needed to bump the lineup to take advantage of the matchups,” noted Streich. “Moving Alex Anderson up a weight, Jamo Douvlos up, Ryan Madigan up a weight; they were all able to get big wins for the team and some of them bonus points.”

Also in that stretch, Kyle Swick earned first-period fall, Joey Arnold a major decision, Zack Zinger a first-period fall and Brandon Daugharthy a second-period fall.

It was a dominant stretch for the Dragons.

“The lineups, the matchups were better for us tonight than the last time we met with them,” Streich said. “And they’re just executing what we’re working on every day.”

Christian Papalia ended the match with a third-period pin at 106.

“Our core group of guys really stepped up,” Streich said. “I’m really happy with the performance overall tonight.”

The Dragons now turn their attention to a long stretch of road matches, beginning on Saturday at Titusville in a varsity-only contest beginning at 7 p.m.

“Warren fans travel well, we’ll have great support,” Streich said. “I think we’re right where we’re supposed to be. We’re trending towards peaking at the end of the season like we always want to.”
