Lady Dragons dominate second half in win over Meadville

Warren’s Riley Childress surveys the Meadville defense during Saturday’s game.

The Warren Lady Dragons turned in a dominant second-half performance en route to a 52-32 non-region win over Meadville on Saturday.

Warren (12-5) outscored their counterparts 18-2 in the third quarter and gave up just nine second-half points.

Quite simply, the defense was superb.

“We hunkered down in the second half,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan. “Emma (Ruhlman) and Riley (Childress) held their two leading scorers (Jaida Speed and Natalia Fontanez-Waid) to four and seven points. We ask a lot of those two, not just to score, but to stop the opposing teams’ best players.”

Childress got to the free-throw line at will, going 11-of-12 from the charity stripe on her way to a game-high 24 points. Ruhlman, meanwhile, 13 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

Warren’s bench was once again outstanding as well.

“Teagan (Paris) got into foul trouble and Carly (Beers) and Cara (Munksgard) gave us some good minutes.”

Taylor Childress knocked down a pair of 3’s on her way to seven points and Gracie Ruhlman added five points.

“Meadville played well in the first half,” LaVan said. “They are scary athletic. We really got after it in the second half and executed flawlessly.”

The Lady Dragons return to action on Monday with a Region 6 battle at Fort LeBoeuf, followed by their second game against General McLane on Wednesday at home in a game that was originally scheduled for Thursday.

EISENHOWER 31

TITUSVILLE, Pa. – Eisenhower’s Emiley Wheeler scored 17 points but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Knights dropped a 45-31 non-region game at Titusville on Saturday.

The Lady Rockets came out in a press to start the game and it paid off, as they built a 19-point lead.

“They caught us off guard in the beginning by pressing us,” said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue. “We had trouble with their press. (Braelyn) Eldred scored 8 of her 10 points in the first quarter, mostly off of steals.”

The Lady Knights played much better in the second half, outscoring Titusville by five.

“In the halfcourt game, we outplayed them, but that press just gave us problems,” Logue said.

Wheeler had a great all-around game for EHS, also contributing 9 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 blocks.

Emma Marino (7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks), Lilee Renninger (7 rebounds) and Leah Peterson (4 steals) also played solid games for the Lady Knights, who travel to Region 3 leader Maplewood today.
