Lady Dragons beat LeBoeuf in Region 6 opener

Warren’s Gracie Ruhlman (25) goes in for a layup against Fort LeBoeuf’s Emily Kucenski (22) during the first half of their game at Warren Area High School, Monday, Jan. 6, 2020. Ruhlman had six points to help the Lady Dragons to a 46-34 Region 6 win over the Bison.

The Warren Lady Dragons bounced back from a weekend defeat to pick up a 46-34 win in their Region 6 opener over visiting Fort LeBoeuf Monday.

Warren started the game with a 7-0 run and led wire-to-wire. This despite the Bison throwing a new defensive look at the Dragons.

“That was a completely different defense,” Warren coach Lisa LaVan said. “We practiced it a few times. It’s nice to get some new things though.”

Taylor Childress’ three capped the 7-0 opening run for Warren (6-4 overall, 1-0 Region 6) with just under five minutes to play in the first.

The Bison (5-5, 0-1) clamped down defensively and held the Dragons scoreless for the next 2:30, but could only get four points of their own. Emma Ruhlman ended the scoring drought off a nice feed from Carly Beers. The Dragons got a defensive rebound and Beers streaked down the court.

Warren’s Teagan Paris had five steals in Monday's win over Corry.

The outlet pass went just too far, but she was able to corral it just before going out on the baseline, turned and fed Ruhlman for an easy layup.

“Carly keeps giving us good minutes,” LaVan said.

The teams traded points for the final two minutes and Warren led, 11-8, after one.

Fort LeBoeuf got within a point early in the second, but Taylor Childress hit a layup and Riley Childress connected on a corner three to push the lead back to seven, 18-11, with 3:24 to play in the half. The teams again traded buckets, but Teagan Paris put in layups on consecutive possessions to give the Dragons a 24-15 advantage. The Bison thought they had a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the half, but it was waved off as being after time expired to keep it 24-15 at halftime.

“Teagan did a nice job,” LaVan said. “We knew they were going to key on Riley and Emma and they did a good job finding Teagan and she finished.”

The Bison cut the lead to 24-20 to start the second half, but Ruhlman hit a free throw and Paris put in another layup to stretch the lead back to seven. Katie Proctor hit a free throw to trim the deficit to six, but Taylor Childress hit her second three of the game to give Warren a 30-21 advantage.

“Taylor’s been our cornerstone with her leadership,” LaVan said. “She’s been my glue.”

A pair of Ruhlman free throws made it 32-21, but Kylie Papay hit a pair of buckets late in the quarter to make it 32-25 heading to the fourth.

The Dragons got buckets from Gracie Ruhlman, Paris and Riley Childress on their first three possessions of the fourth, but Papay answered for the Bison each time. Gracie Ruhlman and Emma Ruhlman hit consecutive baskets to stretch the lead to 42-31. Alee Young hit a field goal, then had a chance to close the gap, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Emma Ruhlman answered for the Dragons and, after a Torsha McCall free throw, Riley Childress closed out the scoring with a layup.

“It was good to get back on our feet, and good to get back home,” LaVan said. “Fort LeBoeuf has a nice program. Coach (Josh) Ponsoll has done a nice job in his first year.”

Papay led the Bison with 12 points. Proctor had nine and Young seven.

Emma Ruhlman had a game-high 15 points to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists. Paris had 10 points, while Taylor Childress added eight and Riley Childress seven.

“Teagan needed that game,” LaVan said. “Gracie’s settling in. That’s such a big jump from junior high to JV, and even bigger to jump over (JV).”

Warren travels to General McLane Thursday.
