Lady Dragon defense stifles Corry in win

Warren's Ella Ordiway (24) puts up a jump shot over a host of Corry defenders during the second quarter of their game at Warren Area High School, Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020. The Dragons rolled past the Beavers, 39-17.

Warren’s stifling defense held Corry to just two points through the second and third quarters in a 40-17 Region 6 win at the Joseph A. Massa gymnasium Thursday.

The Dragons held the Beavers without a field goal for more than two full quarters. The Beavers scored with 49 seconds left in the first and didn’t make another basket until there was 3:16 left in the game.

“Our defense is starting to flow,” Warren coach Lisa LaVan said. “We’re a little more instinctive now.”

Warren (11-5 overall, 4-1 Region 6) opened the game with a 10-0 run. Emma Ruhlman and Teagan Paris got layups to open the scoring, then Riley and Taylor Childress each hit a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to double digits. Lexy Hasbrouck’s layup got Corry (1-13, 0-5) on the board with 3:01 to play in the first. Tayler Elchynski’s layup with 49 seconds left in the frame would be the Beavers’ last field goal until midway through the fourth quarter.

Miranda Nickerson was fouled less than a minute into the second quarter. She missed the first and connected on the second free throw. Corry wouldn’t score again until the final minute of the third.

Warren's Gracie Ruhlman (25) goes in for a layup against a number of Corry defenders during the second quarter of their game at Joseph A. Massa gymnasium Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020. Ruhlman finished with three points in a 39-17 win over the Beavers.

“They’re trying to rebuild the program,” LaVan said. “(Coach) Megan (Sisson) does a good job.”

The Dragons, meanwhile, methodically took care of business. Riley and Taylor Childress combined for nine of Warren’s 11 second quarter points as the Dragons took a 23-5 lead into the locker room.

Ruhlman scored all six Warren points in the third quarter. The Dragons defense nearly held the Beavers scoreless, but Tessa Graham made a free throw with 14 seconds left for Corry’s only point in the frame.

Despite the low scoring start to the second half, the Dragons got an emotional boost as junior Kelsey Stuart made her season debut after rehabbing from offseason surgery for the first part of the year.

“It was nice to get Kelsey back,” LaVan said. “She’s been working so hard to get back.”

Skylar Riedel got Corry’s offense going late in the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer with 3:16 to play. The Beavers picked up eight more points through the end of the game as the Dragons emptied their bench in the varsity only matchup.

“It was good to get everyone in,” LaVan said. “We got to rest our starters a bit.”

The Dragons will be back in action Saturday when they host Meadville. Junior varsity is set for a 1 p.m. tip with varsity to follow.

TIDIOUTE 31, AUSTIN 25

AUSTIN, Pa. — After leading at the half, Tidioute had to rally for a 31-25 comeback win at Austin Thursday.

The Bulldogs led 20-16 at halftime, but were shutout in the third quarter and trailed, 23-20, heading into the fourth. Angelina Sabella got three transitions baskets off steals to put Tidioute back on top for good in the fourth quarter.

“Sloppy play led to sloppy shots,” TCCS coach Christy Valentine said. “Defensive pressure is what saved us tonight. We blow way to many shots inside and it gets us into a hole we struggle to get out of. It was a sloppy game but we will take the win.”

Sabella finished with a double-double with 17 points and 12 steals. Kelsey Nuttall had 14 rebounds and Shelby Proctor grabbed nine boards.

Senior Nakiesha Krouse inched closer to writing her name in the history books with eight points. She’s now 14 points away from becoming the first Tidioute player to reach the 1,000 point mark.

Tidioute welcomes Forest Monday for a 6 p.m. varsity start.
