Knights drop Region 3 showdown with Beavers

Eisenhower’s Alex Hummel bridges his shoulders off the mat while Corry’s Nick Lapinski tries to force him down.

In a battle of unbeatens, Corry came to Eisenhower and showed exactly why it is one of the top wrestling teams in District 10.

The Beavers won seven matches via pinfall en route to a 50-25 win over the Knights. The win assured Corry of at least a share of the Region 3 title.

“They have no holes,” Eisenhower coach Kris Black said. “From 160 through heavyweight, they’re loaded. Our guys wrestled well, they’re just better.”

One place Eisenhower (5-1 overall, 5-1 Region 3) was better was at 120. Senior Logan Jaquay picked up a pinfall victory over Damion Kinney to set a new school record with 118 career victories (see sidebar). Travis Hummel (1994-1997) held the previous mark with 117 wins.

“He’s gotta be our Hertel & Brown Wrestler of the Match,” Black said. “This was a big goal for him, but he’s got a lot more he wants to do.”

Eisenhower's Josh Bortz hooks Corry's Hunter Savitz in a cradle during their 145-pound match at Eisenhower High School, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020. Bortz pinned Savitz, but the Beavers went on to grab a 50-25 win.

Jaquay built a big lead through the first two periods before getting Kinney on his back halfway through the third.

“I knew I just had to work more and make sure I finish,” Jaquay said.

The Knights built a 15-0 lead through the first three matches of the night.

Easton Hedman decked Lucas Peterson early in the second period to get Eisenhower on the board first.

“Easton did a great job starting off and getting us on the board,” Black said.

Gannon Jaquay continued his strong season with a 3-0 decision over Trey Proper at 138. Gannon scored a takedown in the first period and rode out Proper through the second. He got an early escape to start the third, then had to fight off a late shot from Proper to secure the win.

“Gannon wrestled really well,” Black said.

Following a lengthy prematch conversation about a lineup change, Josh Bortz made quick work of Hunter Savitz at 145. He picked up the pin at 1:18 to put the Knights up 15-0.

“It was a switch, and we could’ve pulled Josh back and maybe put Hummel out, but I thought we got the matchup we wanted and we just let Josh go,” Black said.

Nick Lapinski got the Beavers (6-0, 6-0) on the board with a tech fall over Alex Hummel at 152. Lapinski appeared to have Hummel dead to rights at least once in each period, but Hummel fought his way out each time, preserving what could have been a crucial point.

“Alex gave maximum effort,” Black said. “He just kept fighting and all the guys appreciate that effort. It ended up not mattering, but that could have been a big point.”

The Beavers won the next four matches via pinfall.

Dylan Gourley decked Benji Bauer in 3:00 at 160, Austin Sacchetti put Mikael Beaver on his back in 4:45 at 170, Matt Petrilla pinned Jeremyah Aiken in 3:40 at 182 and Hayden Linkerhof got the fall in 43 seconds over Josh Parker at 195.

Suddenly, Corry led 29-15.

“I thought we picked a good place to start,” Black said. “They’re not used to being down and I thought maybe we could get them off a bit. Credit to them, they got bonus points when they needed them.”

Cael Black picked up a 15-5 major decision over Shawn Proctor at 220 to cut the lead to 29-19. Jesse Gourley nearly had Xavier Reyda turned for a late near fall, but Reyda held on for a 7-2 decision to push the Corry lead to 32-19.

“Cael wrestled a really good match, this was a good win for him,” Black said. “I was really happy with Jesse. He gave everything. He felt he had a chance to turn him in the third.”

Lucas Munsee and Kayden Reyda needed a combined 48 seconds to secure the dual match victory for Corry. Munsee decked Anthony Rivera in 25 seconds at 106 and Reyda pinned Ethan Nizzi in 23 seconds at 113.

Logan Jaquay then got his record setter at 120. Derek Hurd closed out the Corry victory with a pinfall in 2:47 over Jake Williams at 126.

Eisenhower gets right back on the mat tonight when the Knights host Falconer (NY).
