Eisenhower matmen deck Saegertown

SAEGERTOWN, Pa. — Eisenhower wrestlers rolled through an intentionally-depleted lineup for a 54-18 Region 3 win at Saegertown Wednesday.

The win clinches second-place in the region and secures a home wrestle-in match for the Knights for the second straight year. Eisenhower picked up six wins by pinfall, plus a pair of forfeits, over a lineup missing four starters.

“This is a big accomplishment,” Eisenhower coach Kris Black said. “Two years in a row we’re going to host a wrestle-in. With as young as we are, I’m proud of them. They did a good job.”

Saegertown (9-3 overall, 5-2 Region 3) picked up a pair of decisions to start the match.

Alex Kightlinger grabbed an 8-1 win over Jake Williams at 126 and Jaeden Reagle narrowly defeated Easton Hedman, 5-4, at 132. Reagle and Hedman are ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Northwest region.

“Williams wrestled a good match,” Black said. “He didn’t give up bonus and wrestled well. Easton lost a tough one to a kid ranked right ahead of him.”

Eisenhower (6-1, 6-1) took control by winning the next six matches.

Alex Hummel picked up a first period pin over Taylor Schultz at 138, Josh Bortz topped Matt Posego, 6-2, at 145, Gannon Jaquay pinned Matthew Nale at 152, Benji Bauer decked Grace Hanzes at 160, Mikael Beaver defeated Keenan Schaaf, 6-2, at 170 and Jeremyah Aiken pinned Zach Dalton at 182.

“I can’t complain with what our kids did,” Black said. “They wrestled hard and got bonus where they could.”

Josh Perrine got some points back for the Panthers with a first period pin over Josh Parker at 195.

But Cael Black got the points right back when he decked Hunter Wright at 220. Jesse Gourley picked up the Knights’ first forfeit win of the night at 285.

Owen Hershelman came right back with a pinfall victory over Anthnoy Rivera at 106 for Saegertown’s final win of the night.

Ethan Nizzi won by fall over Karleigh Steiner at 113 and Logan Jaquay received a forfeit at 120.

“We should be happy with the win,” Black said. “We host a wrestle-in on Wednesday and if we win that, we get to go to the big tournament again.”

Saegertown sat regionally-ranked wrestlers Kenny Kiser (No. 1-138), Landon Caldwell (No. 3-160) and Canyon Smith (No. 3-285) to angle for an easier first-round match at the District 10 Duals if the Panthers win their wrestle-in.

“(They) sat four starters to basically throw the match to aviod Reynolds,” Black said.

“Be careful what you wish for though. Who knows what’s going to happen. I’m happy we won and if we win that (wrestle-in) and have to wrestle the best team in the state, I’m good with that.”

Eisenhower heads south Saturday for the Sharon Duals then returns home for the wrestle-in against a to be determined opponent Wednesday.

“I hope tonight was a confidence booster for some of the guys,” Black said. “There’s still room for improvement, but finally getting that win, in some cases, can be the kick start you need. There are a lot of freshmen in the lineup and they have to get to where they can start believing in themselves. We’re close to postseason and the focus and intensity has to get turned up.”
