DuBois CC defense too much for Sheffield girls
DuBois Central Catholic held Sheffield scoreless for a stretch of 10:42 over the second and third periods en route to a 57-20 win Friday.
The Lady Cardinals aggressive defense led to some quick transition points and allowed them to turn a 9-3 first quarter advantage into a 32-8 halftime lead over their hosts. Alyssa Dunham hit a layup for Sheffield with 5:58 remaining in the second quarter, the Lady Wolverines didn’t score again until Marissa Grubbs knocked down a pair of free throws with 3:16 left in the third.
“We’re hitting some bumps in the road,” Sheffield coach Tony Richards said. “It’s a process and we’re all going through it.”
Neither team was able to get much going offensively in the first quarter. Allison Schmader’s 3-pointer gave Sheffield a breif 3-2 advantage, but Jordan Kooko closed the quarter with a field goal and 3-point play to give DCC the 9-3 edge.
Schmader knocked down her second triple of the game to start the second quarter, but the Cardinals countered with a 7-0 run to take a 16-6 lead. Dunham hit her layup to make it 16-8, but the DCC defense clamped down at that point and put the game away with a 24-0 run.
Kooko had a game-high 17 points. Shay Gulus added nine and Marhra Swallgon eight in the win.
Dunham paced Sheffield with eight points while Schmader had six.
Sheffield travels to Johnsonburg Tuesday.
