Dragons rally past Oil City

OIL CITY, Pa. – The Warren boys are starting to click.

Trailing 27-21 at halftime, the Dragons limited the Oil City to 10 second-half points en route to a big Region 6 road win, 47-37. It’s the third-straight victory overall for the Dragons (5-4 overall, 2-2 Region 6).

“We won the game in the second half,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “We controlled the clock the entire fourth quarter with the lead and held them to 10 points in the second half.”

Peyton Barnes and Mitchell Grosch both hit 3’s in the third quarter, as the Dragons limited the Oilers (5-6, 1-2) to just two points in the period to assume control.

Barnes played a strong game, finishing with a game-high 16 points.

“Peyton played his best offensive game so far,” Berdine said.

The Dragons went 6-for-8 from the free throw line in the fourth (Barnes 4-4, Tom Bablak 2-2) to preserve the lead.

It was even early on before Oil City went on a 12-5 run in the second quarter to take their halftime lead.

Ben Berdine scored seven of his 11 points in the opening half.

Berdine also had a strong game on the boards with a team-high eight, to go along with three assists and a block. Bablak also had three assists, two steals and a block.

Holden Stahl was the only Oiler in double figures with 13 points, eight of which came in the first half.

“I told them we were close to putting it all together and tonight we did,” coach Berdine said. “The kids really worked hard in the second half to limit the second chance attempts in a very physical game.”

Bryce Blair had 17 points, J.T. Blum 13 and Parks Ordiway 12 in a 67-51 JV loss.

The Dragons return to action on Thursday, stepping out of region to host Ridgway.
