Dragons get first win at Harbor Creek in 4 years

HARBOR CREEK, Pa. –Region road wins are always important victories, the one the Warren girls basketball team picked up at Harbor Creek Thursday was a little extra special.

The Lady Dragons defeated the Lady Huskies in Harbor Creek for the first time in at least four years, and their 38-28 win moved them a full game ahead of both Harbor Creek and Fort LeBoeuf for second in Region 6.

“This was a big win for us,” Warren coach Lisa LaVan said. “We haven’t won there in four or five years. It was a great team win. A lot of people did a lot of good things.”

Warren (9-5 overall, 3-1 Region 6) outscored Harbor Creek (6-6, 2-2) 15-2 in the second quarter to take a 24-10 lead into the half.

“We controlled the tempo,” LaVan said. “Riley (Childress) did a great job running that point and controlling the tempo.”

Emma Ruhlman scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the first half.

“Emma had a good first half,” LaVan said. “She came out strong and knocked down some good shots.”

The Lady Huskies weren’t going to go quietly as they outscored the Lady Dragons, 10-6, in the third quarter. Warren made a defensive adjustment in the fourth and went 6-10 from the free throw line to close out the win.

“We just tweaked our defense a little more, hunkered down and got after it,” LaVan said. “It came down to free throws and Emma and Riley knocked them down.”

Harbor Creek’s Jenna Babay came into the game averaging 16.67 points per. The Warren defense held her to half that.

“We held Babay to eight points,” LaVan said. “That was our game plan. It was nice to put in a lot of effort on a game plan and have the team execute like that.”

Ruhlman had seven rebounds to go along with her points. Childress had 10 points and four assists and Teagan Paris added six points in the win.

Warren returns home next week for a 3-game homestand beginning Monday with St. Marys.

“We’re ready to be home for a little bit,” LaVan said.

Harbor Creek won the junior varsity contest, 34-22.

Rylee Kapsar led the Huskies with eight points.

Cara Munksgard led the Dragons with seven points.
