7 Knights to Falconer quarters

FALCONER, N.Y. –Eisenhower sent seven wrestlers to the quarterfinals, and had only one eliminated during the first day of the Falconer Tournament Friday.

Logan Jaquay (120), Easton Hedman (132), Gannon Jaquay (138), Josh Bortz (145), Jeremyah Aiken (182), Cael Black (220) and Jesse Gourley (285) all advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinal round.

“Jeremyah Aiken came in unseeded and had a nice win,” Eisenhower coach Kris Black said. “He had a first period pin. Aiken really stood out. He put himself in a good position for tomorrow. The rest of the guys did what they should have done and all wrestled pretty well.”

Black said it took the guys a bit to get a feel for the tournament in the crowded gymnasium at Falconer.

“I don’t think we looked fantastic,” he said. “There were a lot of kids in the gym and it was a little chaotic. The first round was trying to get a feel for things.”

Black got mostly what he expected from the seven still alive in the quarterfinals.

“Logan wrestled well,” he said. “Easton had a smart, strong match. Cael and Jesse both had falls. They set themselves up well. It’s like I tell them, ‘You can’t win the tournament on Friday night, but you can lose it.'”

Gannon Jaquay also stood out, as he has for most of the season, among the quarterfinal qualifiers.

“Gannon looked good,” Black said. “He had a nice transition into a fall. I think people forget sometimes he’s a regional qualifier. He’s making his own name for himself (this season) and has been a big part of our success this year. He just continues to get better. He’s a tough kid. Scrappy.”

Wrestling will pick back up this morning.
