Youngsville, Sheffield girls, Sheffield boys drop openers

Youngsville’s Kenzie Olewine passes to a teammate during the first half of a game against Mercer in the Sheffield Sports Boosters Tip-Off Tournament at Sheffield High School, Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. The Mustangs advanced to the championship game with a 54-27 win over the Eagles.

A 17-0 run over the second and third quarters pushed Mercer to a 54-27 win over Youngsville in the opening game of the Sheffield Sports Boosters Tipoff Tournament Friday.

The Mustangs (1-0) held the Eagles (0-1) scoreless for 5:44 of game time to blow the game open. Julia Balaski scored seven of her game-high 16 points in the third quarter.

“I’m not disappointed at all,” first year Youngsville coach Vicky Montecalvo said. “Our defense was awesome. We played man to man, had great help and rotation. It was just turnovers and not going to the ball.”

Neither team was able to get much going out of the gate and the game was scoreless until Darby Miller hit a pair of free throws 3:31 in. Sadie Hoffman blocked a shot defensively, then put in a layup on the other end to pull the Eagles even at 6-6. Balaski and Peyton Miller each had a basket in the final 36 seconds to give the Mustangs a 10-6 lead after one quarter.

“We played with a good team through the first quarter,” Montecalvo said.

The Eagles wouldn’t score again until Madison Stevenson hit a free throw with 2:46 to go in the third.

“There’s just a huge combination of newness,” Montecalvo said. “This is my first year, and every coach is different. The girls have adapted well though.”

In addition to Balaski, Darby Miller was also in double figures with 11 points.

Hoffman led the Eagles with nine points. Senz added six and Mallory Sherrard five.
