Wolverines pin Oswayo Valley in opener

Sheffield’s Jake Davidson tries to lock down Oswayo Valley’s Michael Hewitt during the third period of their 170-pound match at Sheffield High School, Friday, Dec. 13, 2019. Davidson came away with a pinfall victory and the Wolverines rolled to a 54-8 win over the Green Wave.

Four pins and five forfeit victories propelled Sheffield to a 54-8 win in its season-opening dual match against visiting Oswayo Valley Friday.

The Wolverines won four of the six contested matches against the Green Wave, all by pinfall. OV won a pair of major decisions.

“The boys wrestled well,” Sheffield coach Jack Rice said. “This is a good group that wants to improve. I really enjoy being in the wrestling room with those guys.”

Jake Davidson got the night started with a win over Michael Hewitt at 170. Davidson took a lead into the second period and had Hewitt nearly decked. Davidson got the job done just 10 seconds into the third.

Ethan Finch (182), Joe Donato (195), Casey Anderson (220) and Nick Billie (285) all received forfeits to put Sheffield ahead 30-0.

Sheffield’s AJ Barnes locks up with Oswayo Valley’s Jake Rhinehart during their 113-pound match at Sheffield High School, Friday, Dec. 13, 2019. Barnes’ second period pin was one of four pinfalls for the Wolverines in their 54-8 win over the Green Wave.

AJ Barnes sealed the Wolverines victory at 113. Barnes squared off with Jake Rhinehart and had Rhinehart nearly turned several times in the first. Barnes got the leverage he needed early in the second for the pinfall victory.

Oswayo Valley got on the board with Zane Malogrino’s 14-3 major decision over Chris Gossert at 126. Jake Disshon wasted little time at 132, as he decked Ashleigh Sparling in 19 seconds.

Cooper Traister had his hands full with Gage Aldrich at 145. Traister found himself down early, but fought back and decked Aldrich just over a minute into the third period.

“Cooper really impressed,” Rice said. “He weathered the storm early, fought and ended up with a pin.”

Kevin Marfink won via forfeit at 152 and Colten Gietler closed out the match with an 8-0 major decision over Landon Mead at 160.

Though there were only six contested matches, Rice was able to see areas where his team can improve.

“We need to get in better shape,” he said. “I tell them all the time we want to win matches in the third period.”

The Wolverines travel to Coudersport Thursday.
