WAHS girls basketball team spreads holiday cheer to adopted grandparents at Cambridge Home

High school sports are about so much more than just the scoreboard.

On Monday, the Warren Area High School girls basketball team took part in a fantastic endeavor, celebrating Christmas with their adopted grandparents, Carol and John at the Cambridge Home.

The Lady Dragons share a special relationship with the Cambridge Home and Monday was another chance to celebrate that.

“The girls loved it,” said head coach Lisa LaVan.

And for both coach and team alike, it’s not only a way to give back but also a way to say thank you to the Warren community for their support.

“Everything that the community does for us and the way they back our program, I try to find ways for us to give back,” LaVan said. “This was special. I’m so proud of the girls.”

This is the third community-oriented event for the Lady Dragons already this season, as they also did a sock drive in conjunction with the Cambridge Home and a benefit at their game with McDowell to benefit Katie Rogers, a local teacher who is battling cancer.

The team and Carol and John had a good time together in which the girls brought them Christmas gifts and shared plenty of smiles and laughs.

“Carol and John are so sweet,” LaVan said. “More than anything, they just love spending time with them and talking with them. It’s also great for the freshmen to see what we’re all about and what we stand for. They have big hearts and are good kids.”

And everyone is a winner when you can give back and make time for others, especially during the holidays.

“We’re so lucky to have young kids that care,” LaVan said. “Why wouldn’t you give back to those that maybe need a lift? The holidays especially can be hard.

“Karen Lucks does a great job (at the Cambridge Home). She said they didn’t have any family and rarely got visitors. It was awesome; they loved it. They even wanted to buy more stuff, because they felt bad they couldn’t give it to everybody.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
