Sheffield wrestlers get big road win at Coudersport

Sheffield wrestlers show their support for head coach Jack Rice and his family as they deal with a medical issue following a 45-30 win at Coudersport Thursday.

COUDERSPORT, Pa. –The Sheffield community has been dealing with a lot of bad news lately, and got hit with another piece early Thursday.

Sheffield’s wrestling team provided a bit of good news Thursday night. Four wrestlers bumped up a weight class and came away with three pins and a decision to propel the Wolverines to a 45-30 win at Coudersport.

This just hours after head coach Jack Rice was forced to miss the match due to a family medical emergency.

Jake Davidson (182), Ethan Finch (195), Collin Brown (113) and AJ Barnes (120) all wrestled at higher weight classes. Davidson, Finch and Brown earned pinfall victories, while Barnes came away with a 5-0 decision.

“We asked them to sacrifice and they came through with big wins,” Sheffield assistant coach Tom Holden said.

The pins came fast and furious from the start.

Landon Mead put the Wolverines on top first with a 35 second pinfall win over Wyatt Morales at 160. Thomas Wilson needed just seven seconds to put Joe Donato on his back at 170 to knot the match at 6-6.

Davidson took care of Allen Williams in 1:28, while Finch decked Dylan Hajans in 43 seconds to stake Sheffield to an 18-6 advantage.

Cale Ayers answered right back with a 13 second pin over Casey Anderson at 220, but Nick Billie got the points back for Sheffield with a 27 second win over Cooper Rossman at 285.

After a no contest at 106, Sheffield took the next three matches. Brown decked Dash Nelp at 113 and Barnes got the decision over Wyatt Daisley at 120 before Chris Gossert picked up a forfeit win at 126 to make it 39-12 in favor of the Wolverines.

James Cooney pinned Jake Disshon at 132 and Dalton Miller grabbed a forfeit at 138 to close the gap to 39-24.

Cooper Traister pinned Chris Davis at 145 for Sheffield’s final win of the night. Dylan Kelly decked Kevin Marfink at 152 to end the match.

The Wolverines were inspired to wrestle well for their head coach who had to take his daughter to Children’s Hospital just hours before the match was set to begin.

“The team did this in support of Jack,” Holden said.

Sheffield is off until after the new year when the Wolverines go back to Coudersport for the Coudersport Duals Jan. 4, 2020.
