Sheffield girls rally past Oil City for first win

After a tough start to the season at their tip-off tournament, Tuesday sure felt good for the Sheffield girls basketball team.

The Lady Wolverines overcame a scoreless first quarter to beat Oil City, 33-26.

“We didn’t score a bucket until the 6:42 mark of the second quarter, which started an 11-0 run,” said Sheffield coach Tony Richards. “That momentum carried us the rest of the way.”

Trailing 11-0 early, Sheffield showed plenty of resiliency. They also displayed tremendous free throw shooting, courtesy of Marissa Grubbs. The senior was 10-of-11 from the line, including 7-of-8 in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.”

Allison Schmader added eight points for the Wolverines (1-2), while Ashley Frederick pulled down 11 rebounds to go with her four points.

“A lot of our success came from our ability to change defenses,” Richards said. “I’m really proud of the girls.”

Maddy Marczak led Oil City with 11 points.

Sheffield returns to action Thursday, traveling to Austin.

TIDIOUTE 18

GUYS MILLS, Pa. – Maplewood outscored Tidioute 26-5 in the first quarter en route to a 65-18 win over the visiting Bulldogs.

“Maplewood did well on defense with some good extended defensive pressure,” said Tidioute coach Bob Holmes. “We turned over the ball 24 times which lead to countless fast break points for Maplewood. We couldn’t find a rythem offensively and struggled shooting all night long.”

A total of 13 different players scored for Maplewood.

Derek Klos led Tidioute with seven points.

“I felt like we played pretty good half court defense, we just didn’t give ourselves much chance to play it with all the turnovers we had,” Holmes said. “This is a game that we need to take some lessons away and learn some things but put behind us quickly and move on.”
