Sheffield girls rally for second win

AUSTIN, Pa. – For the second time in as many games, the Sheffield girls got down 11-0. And again, they came back to win.

Allison Schmader scored 10 points to lead a balanced effort as the Wolverines evened their record at 2-2 with a 36-18 win at Austin on Thursday.

“They got in front of us 11-0 and then we held them to seven points the rest of the game,” noted Sheffield coach Tony Richards. “We’re relying on our defense to win games. We also shot well from the free throw line.

Sheffield (2-2) really hit their stride offensively in the second half, outscoring the Panthers 28-7.

Richards noted the strong play of Lily Lauffenburger, who finished with seven points, as being a key part of the comeback.

“Lily stepped up big time in the second half and showed a lot of leadership,” he said.

One of the other keys for Sheffield was slowing down Austin’s leading scorer, Taylor Brewer.

They did just that, holding her to two points.

“Hats off to Marissa Grubbs, she guarded her man-to-man and did a great job,” Richards said.

The Lady Wolverines have now won back-to-back games and are playing with a lot of confidence.

“It’s great for them,” Richards said. “They are figuring out ways to win basketball games.”
