Lady Dragons ease to win over Salamanca

Emma Ruhlman scored six points against constant defensive pressure against Villa on Monday.

Emma Ruhlman scored 21 points and Riley Childress added 13 as the Warren Lady Dragons rolled past Salamanca, 48-18 in the opening round of the Lady Dragon Tip-Off Tournament on Friday.

Warren held Salamanca without a point in the opening quarter and never looked back.

“It was a good opener,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan. “We’re young and they need all the game time they can get to continue to get better.”

Indeed they are young, as Taylor Childress represents the lone senior on the roster.

“Taylor is a rock in terms of being a senior leader and doing what she needs to do,” noted LaVan.

Warren's Ella Ordiway locks in on defense.

Tegan Paris had six points for the winners, while Taylor Childress and freshman Gracie Ruhlman both had five points. Emma Ruhlman had eight rebounds and Riley Childress seven steals.

“Overall, I was proud of the freshman,” LaVan said. “They stepped up. I thought Riley did a really nice job of controlling the tempo.”

The Lady Dragons will face a much stiffer test in the final tomorrow (7:30 p.m.) against Mercyhurst Prep, a 63-52 winner over Maplewood.

“Mercyhurst Prep is very senior-heavy, a very good team,” LaVan said. “Dan (Perfetto) runs a great program. They’ll be gunning for us.”

Warren won the JV game, 40-16. Mikan Beers had 12 points for the winners.
