BRADFORD, Pa. – Riley Childress made four 3’s in the first half and was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter on her way to a game-high 20 points, leading the Warren Lady Dragons to a hard-fought 42-32 win over Bradford on Monday.

“We were able to jump on them pretty quick,” said coach Lisa LaVan about beating her alma mater. “Riley had the hot hand early and we were able to get her the ball.”

Childress got in some foul trouble in the second quarter, and LaVan praised the work of her young bench players, Carly Beers, Ella Ordiway and Cara Munksgard.

The Lady Owls (3-4) trailed 22-12 at halftime, but cut the lead to three at the end of the third quarter, thanks to the play of Hannah Lary and Erica Marshall, who finished with 12 and 10 points respectively.

“They sat in their zone, which I thought they would,” noted LaVan. “We played some good defense early on, but we had a couple of turnovers early in the second half and they crept back in. Overall I thought we did well on Lary and Marshall.”

Childress, her older sister Taylor and Emma Ruhlman combined to make 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to help the Lady Dragons (3-3) pull away.

“We decided if we had the lead, we were going to make them come out and play us,” noted LaVan.

Gracie Ruhlman netted the lone field goal of the fourth quarter for WAHS.

Teagan Paris had another solid game on the boards with seven to go along with her six points, while Emma Ruhlman had another strong all-around game with 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

“This was a good team win,” LaVan said.

The Warren JV team was also victorious, 23-18. Mikan Beers and Carly Beers both had eight points in the win.

The Lady Dragons return to action on Friday at the Sharon Tournament against Farrell.
