Lady Dragons drop road tilt with Erie
ERIE, Pa. – The Warren girls’ brutal early-season schedule continued on Saturday against Erie High.
Leading by five at halftime, the Lady Dragons faded in the second half of what turned out to be a 64-42 loss.
“They have a crazy amount of depth,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan. “They’re playing like a good 6A school. Again, these are very good early-season crossover games for us. We had one close one (McDowell) and this one that kind of got away from us a little bit in the second half.”
Teagan Paris came out with a pair of first-quarter buckets for Warren (2-3), and a Riley Childress 3-pointer staked them to an 11-7 advantage.
Emma Ruhlman scored nine of her game-high 16 points in the second quarter as the Lady Dragons built the halftime lead.
“It was a really physical game,” LaVan said. “They really made Emma and Riley work for everything.”
D’Auzhanay Harden and Torreuna Roberts scored six points each in the third quarter as Erie (7-1) took a 6-point lead.
In the fourth quarter, they simply wore the Dragons down, outscoring them 22-6 over the final eight minutes.
“Night and day,” LaVan said of the first half and second half. “We came out and did some really good things. We rebounded really well. The second half we lost track of the game plan and didn’t execute on the defensive end.”
Ruhlman finished with 11 rebounds in yet another double-double effort, while Paris had eight boards.
Arianna Mitchell had 15 points to lead a balanced Erie attack.
“I was really proud of Teagan and Taylor (Childress),” LaVan said. “They are really starting to step up.”
Erie won the JV game, 33-20. Ella Ordiway had eight points and Carly Beers six for Warren.
“We saw some really good promise from the freshmen in the JV game,” noted LaVan.
Warren returns to action today at Bradford, before traveling to Sharon for their holiday tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Lady Dragons will play Farrell at 3 p.m. on Friday. Sharon and Maplewood will play in the other contest.
