Hoffman, YHS girls best Union City

UNION CITY, Pa. –Sadie Hoffman’s 24 points and Youngsville’s tenacious defense propelled the Eagles to a 46-37 Region 2 win at Union City Monday.

Hoffman was held scoreless in the first quarter, but found her rhythm in the second and added 10 crucial fourth-quarter points. Meanwhile, Eliza Reynolds, the Bears’ leading scorer (17.29 ppg) had eight points in the first quarter, but only three field goals the rest of the way.

“Eliza still got 19, but we closed her off in the third and fourth and made her force,” Youngsville assistant coach Troy Weissinger said. “We played tough ‘D’ and controlled the boards down the stretch.”

Union City (2-6 overall, 0-5 Region 2) led 12-6 after the first quarter, but Youngsville (4-3, 3-2) was able to flip the script in the second to head to halftime tied at 18-18.

The Eagles led 29-28 going into the fourth quarter. Hoffman scored 10 points in the frame, including a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line to seal the win.

“Sadie had a good game offensively,” Weissinger said. “She made foul shots to seal it down the stretch. We did a great job taking care of the ball at the end. I told them to give me 110 percent on defense for 32 minutes, take care of the ball and we would come out on top. They did.”

Chloe Senz had seven points in the win, while Kamryn Weissinger, Mallory Sherrard and Mia Rafalski all added four.

Youngsville will compete in the Corry Tournament, beginning Thursday.
