Beyer breaks school mark in 100 freestyle, Dragons race past Meadville

Warren sophomore Katie Beyer broke the school record in the 100 freestyle, previously set by Kristen Handkammer in 1996.
A performance for the record books.
Sophomore Katie Beyer broke a 23-year old school record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:00.54 and the Warren girls swim team raced to a 99-73 win over Meadville on Thursday.
Beyer broke Kristen Handkammer’s mark of 1:00.95 set in 1996.
The Lady Dragon team of Kirsten Johnson, Paige Johnson, Beyer and Ellie Hahn came from behind to edge Meadville in the opening event of the night, the 200 medley relay, and that momentum carried over to the rest of the meet.
“They kind of came together after that,” said Warren coach Russ Beyer. “That first race, the 200 medley relay, that kind of set the tone. From there, we just kept going. We had some good races and we have some depth. We had quality races in every race.”

Warren’s Derek Hahn competes in the 200 IM.
Those four all won individual events, as did Katie Madigan, who once again took first in diving.
“Our divers are doing well,” coach Beyer said. “All of the girls, with their gymnastics background, that helps in the transition to the diving board. They are responding well to coach Adrienne Barmore, who is doing a great job with them.
“Ellie (Hahn) in that 200 medley relay is doing really well. Paige Johnson both in the IM and breaststroke has her best times already. Same thing with Kirsten Johnson. Being a freshman, every time she enters the pool, she’s improving.”
Beyer also noted the improvement of a number of other swimmers.
“Grace Pennucci is improving every time out, Riley Yeager, Natalie Valentine, Seebe Proper … they’re enjoying their events,” he said. “We have a lot of versatility and they can do events that they really like.”

Warren's Paige Johnson competes in the 200 IM.
For the boys, Max Harrison and Derek Hahn were individual event winners in a 119-57 setback, while the 200 free relay team was also a winner.
“Derek, Max and Connor (Fehlman), they’re posting some good times,” coach Beyer said. “The new kids, Jarod Peterson, Nick Gorton, Colin Drayer, Graham Carr … they are working hard and improving every day.”
