GUYS MILLS, Pa. –Eisenhower won the first eight matches of the night en route to a 43-33 Region 3 win at Maplewood Tuesday.

The Knights (2-0 overall, 2-0 Region 3) won the first five weight classes by forfeit before Alex Hummel picked up a pinfall win over Lucas Kennedy at 138. The Tigers took the final six contests, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.

Hummel was trailing Kennedy before coming back to get the pin at 5:18. Josh Bortz picked up a forfeit win at 145 and Gannon Jaquay earned a 7-3 decision over Austin Parker at 152.

“Alex wrestled a good match,” Eisenhower coach Kris Black said. “Gannon, I thought, wrestled really, really well. He controlled the match for the most part and looked sharp for his first time on the mat this year.”

Maplewood got on the board at 160 when Gregory Roae decked Alex Green. Logan Gross followed with a win by injury default over Steven Reilly at 170. Jesse McFadden pinned Michael Beaver at 182 and JD McFadden decked Josh Parker at 195.

“Beaver was in on a nice shot, but just ended up making a rookie mistake,” Black said. “Josh Parker was the wrestler of the match for us. He fought so hard against a really tough kid. We were really happy with the effort he gave. He’s going to get better.”

In perhaps the most anticipated match of the night, Eisenhower’s Cael Black squared off with Maplewood’s Joey King at 220 pounds. Both wrestlers came into the match ranked in the top-10. King caught Black for a 5-point move, then took advantage of Black’s aggressiveness later in the match for a takedown to come away with a 7-0 decision.

“It was considerably closer than the score,” Black said. “It’s what you want to see from those kids. We could’ve bumped Cael up, but he wanted to take the tougher match. It’s nice to get one of those early on so you know what you need to work on.”

Steven Hemme closed out the contest with a forfeit win at 285.

The Knights will have a day to get ready for another big Region 3 contest. Eisenhower hosts Cochranton Thursday.
