Dragons fade late in loss at Cathedral Prep

ERIE, Pa. – Warren was hanging right with Cathedral Prep, trailing by just two (26-24) at halftime, but hot shooting in the second half lifted the Ramblers to a 69-49 non-region win over the Dragons on Wednesday.

“They got hot and we hit a cold stretch,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine.

The Dragons led by one at the end of the first quarter (17-16) and the two teams traded blows the rest of the half.

Tom Bablak and Mitchell Grosch both scored five early points for the Dragons to get them going after a sluggish offensive performance on Monday against St. Marys.

Warren (2-2) played a zone defense for much of the first half, which seemed to throw the Ramblers off-balance.

“There were some things we wanted to work on tonight,” Berdine said. “We were able to sit in a zone and work on it in the first half.”

That changed early in the second half, however, as Quentin Santillan knocked down a pair of triples early in the third quarter.

“Santillan hit those two 3s in the third and they (Prep) did a better job knocking down shots,” Berdine said.

Grosch, who scored a team-high 15 points and Ben Berdine (13 points) kept the Dragons in the game for much of the second half, but the Ramblers (2-0), who were coming off a win over Lake Catholic in their opener, pulled away late.

Bablak had five steals and three assists to go along with his seven points.

The inside duo of Liam Galla (17 points) and Mike Lucarotti (15 points) gave Warren fits in the second half.

“It was very physical, which is what we expected,” coach Berdine said. “Offensively, we were good in the first half. Our shot selection was much better than it was on Monday.”

The Dragons return to action on Tuesday, when they host Titusville in their Region 6 opener.

“You have to be able to defend your home court in region play,” coach Berdine said. “In this region, you can lose to just about anybody on the road.”
