Dragon matmen earn DH split

Warren senior Alex Anderson battles with Harbor Creek’s Matt Cassidy during their 145-pound match on Friday night at Warren Area High School. Anderson earned a 9-4 decision.

Friday night was the beginning of a busy two-day stretch for the Warren Dragon wrestling team.

At Joseph A. Massa Gymnasium, they split with Meadville and Harbor Creek, and depart early today for the Tom Carr duals in Erie, where they will wrestle five more matches.

On Friday, they fell to Meadville in the opener, 45-27, before bouncing back with a convincing win over Harbor Creek, 51-27.

“The first one was a bit of a Christmas hangover,” said Warren coach Paul Streich. “I thought the second match we came out and wrestled the way that we can. I was happy with the performance overall.”

There were a number of impressive performances from the Dragons, led by Donovan Fiscus, Zack Zinger and Tristan Dolan, who went a combined 6-0, with five of those victories coming via fall.

Warren’s Zack Zinger gets his hand raised after pinning Meadville’s Winston Heagy during their match on Friday.

Both of Zinger’s pins came in the first period.

“Zack had a great night,” Streich said. “He injured himself in the tournament last weekend, rested a little bit and just continues to work hard and improve every match. He’s a silent leader in our room.”

Streich also praised the work of Joey Arnold, who came back with a first period pin against Harbor Creek after dropping a tough 4-2 match to Meadville’s unbeaten Trent Tidball.

“I thought Joey wrestled a great match against an undefeated boy,” Streich said. “He’s always looking for that tough competition.”

Alex Anderson came back from a tough break in the opener after he was called for an illegal slam, earning a workmanlike 9-4 victory against the Huskies’ Matt Cassidy.

Warren's Donovan Fiscus battles Meadville's Isaac Chatman. Fiscus went on to earn a third-period pin.

“Alex is another one of those kids, he’s a quiet leader,” Streich said.

Ryan Madigan was an 8-2 winner over Tanner Ehgrott in the opener before dropping a tough 7-3 decision against the Huskies.

Jake Hayes came back with a first period pin against the Huskies after a tough match against Meadville, as the Dragons were the beneficiary of three forfeits.

Christian Papalia also came back after an absolute battle in which he lost an 11-6 decision to Meadville’s Will Terwilliger, pinning Harbor Creek’s Charlie Giambrone.

“The second match set us up great to leave the gym with a win and send us off to a busy day,” Streich said. “We’re looking for equal success. The boys have goals and we’re working hard to achieve those.

The Dragons will wrestle Perry Traditional Academy, North East and Girard
