County grapplers advance at STWOA

SALAMANCA, N.Y. –Fourteen Warren County wrestlers have advanced to the semifinals of the Souther Tier Wrestling Officials Association Holiday Classic Tournament in Salamanca, New York.

Warren sent eight into Saturday’s action 2-0, while Eisenhower had five and Youngsville one. Ironically, two of the Knights, Gannon Jaquay and Josh Bortz, will face each other in the semifinals, guaranteeing at least one finalist.

“I thought our guys showed a lot of fight, even when they lost,” Eisenhower coach Kris Black said. “It’s a learning process. The guys are trying to move on and get better.”

Jaquay and Bortz will meet in one of the 145-pound semifinals. To get there, Jaquay knocked Warren’s Alex Anderson into the consolation round.

“That was a big win for him,” Black said. “Alex beat him twice last year and Gannon won 3-0 today. Just a solid win for him.”

They will be joined in the semifinals by teammates Logan Jaquay (126), Easton Hedman (132) and Cael Black (220). Josh Parker was the only Knight eliminated from the tournament through Friday’s action.

Dragons Christian Papalia (106), Ryan Madigan (132), Donovan Fiscus (138), Kyle Swick (152), Joey Arnold (160), Zack Zinger (170), Jamo Douvlos (182) and Jake Hayes (220) all advanced to the semifinals. All other Warren wrestlers are still alive in the consolations.

Youngsville’s Jake DeSimone (285) is on to the semifinals as well.

“We’ve got to go in and keep scoring points, get bonus points where we can and keep doing the best we can,” Black said
