County Clash

Eisenhower’s Lilee Renninger goes up for two of her game-high 17 points during the first half against Sheffield on Saturday. The Lady Knights earned their first win of the season, 50-21.

Eisenhower coach Mike Logue knows the importance of games against fellow Warren County foes.

After dropping a heartbreaker to Youngsville on Thursday, the Lady Knights got on track with their first win of the season, as Lilee Renninger and Emiley Wheeler both recorded double-doubles in a 50-21 triumph over Sheffield.

“We gauge ourselves based upon the three schools in the county,” Logue said. “We have them here three games in a row. Youngsville Thursday, Sheffield and then Tidioute on Monday.”

The Lady Knights (1-3) were sharp right from the get-go in against the Lady Wolverines (2-3), jumping out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter.

They never looked back.

Sheffield’s Allison Schmader looks for an open teammate while being defended by Eisenhower’s Bella Marino during their game on Saturday at Eisenhower High School.

Renninger, Wheeler and Delaney Chase did all of the scoring in the first half, as Ike took a 25-6 lead.

Renninger and Wheeler were effective in the post. Renninger had four offensive putbacks in the first 16 minutes, while Wheeler had two and Chase one.

“We’ve been very blessed, from Holly Chapman to Kirsten Baran to Lydia Giannini to Emiley Wheeler and then Lilee Renninger,” noted Logue. “We have some good posts to work with and I’m very happy with how we’ve used our posts through the years.”

Sheffield, which was coming off back-to-back wins over Oil City and Austin, didn’t quit despite being down by a large margin.

Alyssa Dunham hit back-to-back jumpers in the third quarter, and Lily Lauffenburger did the same in the fourth.

Eisenhower’s Delaney Chase makes a pass during the first half of Saturday’s game against Sheffield at Eisenhower High School. Chase had nine points, four steals and three assists in the EHS victory.

Dunham, Lauffenburger and Marissa Grubbs all had six points to lead Sheffield.

For Eisenhower, they also got to get a number of younger players some varsity experience in the fourth quarter.

And for all involved, this game provided a lot of valuable lessons from the veteran head coach.

“We have to remember that we are teachers,” Logue said. “Even though you go over it many times in practice, sometimes the excitement of the game gets you flustered. We just have to sometimes remind them, whether that be through timeouts or just reminding them of where they’re supposed to be on the floor.”

Renninger finished with a game-high 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Wheeler had 15 points,10 boards and three steals. Chase also had nine points, four steals and three assists, Emma Marino three steals and Angeles Jareno four steals.

“The girls came out and worked hard at practice and I thought were more focused in the first half,” noted Logue. “I was very pleased with our play from the beginning.

“We’re going to remember if we do the little things right and concentrate on what we’re supposed to do, we make the team stronger and we’ll be able to compete in our region.”

Eisenhower welcomes Tidioute on Monday, while Sheffield hosts Johnsonburg on Wednesday.
