Lady Eagles take 3rd place game over Sheffield
After a tough opener, the Youngsville and Sheffield girls basketball teams had a chance to right the ship in the consolation game of the Sheffield Tip-Off Tournament.
Thanks to a balanced effort, it was the Lady Eagles who got their first win of the season, 34-20.
“I’m really proud of the girls to come out and get a win,” said Youngsville coach Vicky Montecalvo. “We started the game off slow but we were able to get into a rhythm and it showed.”
Both teams started off slow, with the game tied 4-4 at the end of the first quarter.
Sadie Hoffman got the Youngsville attack going, however, with a momentum-changing steal and layup that started a quick 7-0 spurt.
Kamryn Weissinger also hit a jumper in the run and Hoffman turned defense into offense again to make it 11-4 midway through the second quarter.
Buckets from Allison Schmader and Alyssa Dunham helped get Sheffield back to within five at the break, 14-9.
The Lady Eagles came out strong to start the third quarter, as buckets from Hoffman, Mia Rafalski and Weissinger gave them a 10-point lead, 22-12.
A Lily Lauffenburger jumper kept Sheffield within striking distance, and Dunham drilled a three to end the the quarter to make it 22-15.
Dunham drilled another 3 to start the fourth, getting Sheffield to within 22-18, but they couldn’t get any closer.
That’s because Youngsville went on another big run, this one a 12-0 surge that effectively put the game away.
Mallory Sherrard keyed the charge, scoring six of her eight points during the run, which ended with another steal and layup from Hoffman.
It was Hoffman who led a balanced Youngsville attack with 12 points, while Dunham finished with 10 to pace Sheffield.
“It feels good for the girls to get a win,” Montecalvo said. “Hopefully we can carry this over.”
