Busy slate of holiday sporting events on tap
The Warren Dragons will have an extra wrestling match on Friday.
In a makeup with Meadville, they will now square off with the Bulldogs at 5 p.m. as part of a doubleheader, with their regularly scheduled match against Harbor Creek to follow at 7 p.m.
That’s just one of many post-Christmas events that Warren County teams will be participating in.
The Sheffield Sports Boosters will host their annual boys Christmas Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Kane (3-3) and Smethport (2-3) will square off in the opener, followed by the second meeting of the season between Youngsville (5-3) and the host Wolverines (0-5).
Youngsville enters having won four of its past five games.
Also in boys basketball, Warren (2-4) will look to get back on track when they host a red-hot Bradford team on Saturday (1 p.m. J.V., varsity to follow. Since a loss to Oil City in their season opener, the Owls have rattled off five-straight wins, including an 86-82 double-overtime thriller over Olean in the Joe DeCerbo Memorial Tournament title game at St. Bonavenutre on Sunday, a game in which Tyler Gigliotti exploded for a tournament-record 41 points. The Dragons, meanwhile, are coming off a pair of Region 6 losses to Titusville and General McLane, despite leading in the fourth quarter of each game.
The Eisenhower (1-3) boys, meanwhile, will play in the Corry Tournament on Saturday and Monday.
In girls basketball, Warren (3-3) will be playing in the Sharon Tournament on Friday and Saturday. They will battle Farrell (4-1) on Friday and then either Maplewood (7-1) or host Sharon (1-5) on Saturday. The Lady Dragons are coming off a 10-point win over Bradford. Sophomores Riley Childress (15.5) and Emma Ruhlman (15.3) both currently rank in the top 20 in District 10 in scoring.
The Youngsville Lady Eagles (4-3) will actually get things started today when they play host Corry (0-3) at the Beavers’ Christmas Tournament, with Iroquois (3-4) and Seneca (2-6) squaring off in the other matchup. They are coming off a win against Union City in which Sadie Hoffman erupted for 24 points.
The Sheffield girls, meanwhile will be playing in the Union Tournament, along with Cameron County and Clarion-Limestone.
