Austin tops Sheffield at the buzzer

Jackson Glover scored 15 of his game-high 36 points in the fourth quarter to propel Austin to a 59-58 win at Sheffield Friday.

The Wolverines had a 45-36 lead going into the fourth quarter, but Glover took over and Austin outscored Sheffield 23-13 in the final frame to pick up the win.

“We tried to deny him,” Sheffield coach Mike Knapp said. “We even doubled him at times. He’s just a great player.”

Skylar Crawford put in the game-winner on a offensive rebound as time expired.

“In the end, a missed shot fell into the hands of (Crawford) who had one other field goal,” Knapp said. “That did us in. It’s a very tough loss, but I’m proud of the effort. Our execution as a team and coaches just has to get better at crunch time.”

Tony Richards, Jake Vinopal and Tyler Hepinger all connected on 3-pointers in the first quarter as Sheffield raced out to an 18-13 lead after the first eight minutes. Richards hit two more threes in the second quarter to give the Wolverines a 30-24 advantage at the half.

Richards and Hepinger scored all 15 Sheffield points in the third quarter, with Richards knocking down two more 3-pointers as the Wolverines continued to build their lead.

Glover then dominated the fourth quarter as Austin made its comeback bid.

Hepinger led the Wolverines with 26 points and Richards added 17 in the loss.
