Fighting Tigers shine at state karate championships

Fighting Tigers Martial Arts members Guen Nudd, Owen Wintemute, Kendra Casey, Kelly Wintemute, Elisabeth Casey and Ryan Wellner earned trophies at the 47th annual Pa. Karate Championships held Nov. 9 in New Kensington.

Several members of the FTMA karate team recently competed at the 47th Annual Pa. Karate Championships held Nov. 9 in New Kensington. The tournament was hosted by Master Frank Caliguri and had competitors from the tri-state area. Several students also received PKRA certificates for placing in the top 10 in the 2019 Season.

The following FTMA competitors won trophies in their divisions: Ryan Wellner won a 1st in Forms, 1st in Fighting, 1st in Weapons and 1st in Stick Fighting. He also won the Kyu Grand Champion trophy. Elisabeth Casey won a 1st in Fighting, Kelly Wintemute won a 2nd in Forms, Owen Wintemute won a 3rd in Forms, Kendra Casey won a 3rd in forms and 3rd in Fighting, and Guen Nudd won a 3rd in Fighting and a 4th in forms.

State PKRA Certificates were awarded to Owen Wintemute, Ryan Wellner, Guen Nudd, and Kendra Casey. The Pa. Karate Rating Association rates Pennsylvania competitors throughout the tournament season based on accumulated points. They then award certificates and patches to competitors rated in the top 10 in each divisions forms, fighting and weapons.

The team is coached by Master Instructor Kimio Nelson, USAKF National Team Coach and 4-time Karate Hall of Fame Inductee.
