Youngsville bests Eisenhower again

What a difference a day makes.

Just one night after surviving a five set thriller on the road at Eisenhower, Youngsville came home and swept the Knights, 25-10, 25-22 and 25-16. The win gave the Eagles a season sweep over their biggest rivals, and perhaps more importantly, a big momentum boost heading into the District 10 playoffs.

“It was night and day from yesterday,” Youngsville coach Vicky Montecalvo said. “We just had our heads on right. We came out great in the first game last time and let the second get away. It started to get away from us a little bit in the second again, but we reigned it in and played our game. It’s our biggest rival, so you never know what can happen.”

The Eagles (7-7 overall, 5-4 Region 3) got a big boost from the service line. Andrea Sveda had 25 service points, including a dozen aces.

“It finally clicked,” Montecalvo said. “She realized that when you control the ball, great things happen.”

Ellie Bojaczko had 12 service points with two aces and Sam Wilson had six service points with an ace.

“The confidence that these girls now have, everyone can see it,” Montecalvo said. “It’s awesome because they deserve it. They believe they can do things now that they never realized they could before.”

Kamryn Weissinger had six kills for the Eagles, while Amber Evans had 11 assists and Mallory Sherrard provided solid defense.

Leading Eisenhower were Currie Hultman (14 service points, 7 aces, 4 kills), Rayna Hultman (11 service points, 3 aces) and Emiley Wheeler (2 service points, 3 digs, 2 kills, 2 blocks).

“They served us right off the court in the first game,” said Eisenhower coach Scott Olson. “The second game we were able to claw back after they went on a big run and the third game was back and forth that they were able to pull away from at the end. Tough game to end the season, but the girls played hard.

Youngsville now turns its attention to the first round of the D-10 playoffs and a date at Rocky Grove Tuesday. Montecalvo hopes her team can carry the momentum from this match into the postseason.

“This was a great way for them to see what they’re truly capable of heading into the playoffs,” she said.

Youngsville won the junior varsity contest 25-21 and 25-23.

“They played great and it was a great win to end the season,” Youngsville assistant coach Sarah Dwyer said. “We’re so proud of the work they’ve done.”
