Warren volleyball gets revenge on General McLane

EDINBORO, Pa. – Don’t look now, but Warren volleyball is starting to get on a roll.

After falling to General McLane 3-1 early in the season, the Lady Dragons traveled to Edinboro and turned the tables, winning 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 26-24, 25-18).

“We showed a lot of resiliency as we were able to secure leads in three games and weather the runs from GM,” said Warren coach Mike Dolan. “They had a couple of nice hitters and servers but we put up a nice block and were able to slow them down and we found our passing when we needed it.”

The win was the third-straight for Warren since a loss to McDowell on Sept. 24, and improved their record to 5-3 in Region 6.

Warren had three players – Grace Wortman, Olivia English, and Jordan Sitler with double-digit kills.

Wortman (16 kills, 11 digs, 2 blocks), English (15 kills, 4 blocks, 1 ace), Sitler (10 kills, 2 blocks), Lex Nyquist (43 assists 19 digs), Katie Madigan (38 digs, 2 aces, 8 assists), Halee Mineweaser (7 kills), Meredith Morrison (3 digs, 1 ace) and Hannah Shattuck (4 kills, 2 digs, 1 block) led Warren.

Nyquist once again did a terrific job of putting her hitters in great spots to attack, while Madigan had another strong defensive game.

“Our middles, Jordan and Olivia both were very good at the net again,” Dolan said. “Grace has a big game on the outside with some real nice swings. Katie and Lex continue to do a great job turning defense to offense.”

The JV team lost in three, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12.

Jayna Baldensperger (8 kills), Ellee Irwin (7 kills, 6 digs), Cara Munksgard (2 kills), Gracie Gatto (4 digs), Meredith Morrison (3 aces 2 digs), Isabel Wortman (5 digs, 1 ace), Carly Beers (2 aces, 1 block), Lexi Hoffman (1 kill), Kirsten Johnson (1 kill), Brooke Edwards (1 dig), Bailey Roudybush (1 dig) and Lauren Dolan (17 assists) paced the Lady Dragons.

Warren is home Tuesday against Villa, which will be their ‘Pink Out’ game.

MERCYHURST PREP 3, EISENHOWER 2

Eisenhower got up 2-0 on visiting Mercyhurst Prep on Thursday, but wasn’t quite able to finish off the match, as the Lakers rallied to earn a 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 16-25, 17-25, 9-25) victory.

“Our inexperience and inability to close out sets when we have a big lead showed,” said Eisenhower coach Scott Olson. “We had big leads in both the first two sets and let them claw their way back in.”

In the fourth set, Olson noted that Prep had ‘a server that rattled off eight or nine in a row.’

That being said, he was proud of his team’s fight, especially in the fifth and deciding set.

“The girls battled,” he said. “That last set, they fought real hard, we just had a couple things not go our way. I was pleased. The energy level was high, the excitement was high that entire last set.”

Leading the Lady Knights were Rayna Hultman (17 assists, 10 digs, 6 aces), Emiley Wheeler (13 kills, 10 digs, 3 aces), Madi Green (6 kills) and Paige Edwards (17 digs, 5 kills).

“The girls were upbeat, which is good,” Olson added.

The Lady Knights also have some positive news on the injury front, as Currie Hultman has a good chance to return next week.

The JV squad lost 24-26, 22-25. Destiny Nelson (4 service points, 4 aces), Phoebe Tower (1 service point, 1 ace, 1 kill), Logan Grove (2 kills, 1 block) and Mackenzie Dunn (1 kill) paced EHS.

JOHNSONBURG 3, SHEFFIELD 0

JOHNSONBURG, Pa. –A road weary Sheffield volleyball team, playing its third road match this week, was swept at Johnsonburg, 25-11, 25-20 and 25-9.

The Wolverines had trouble receiving the Rams’ serve all match and finished with 15 serve receive errors.

“Johnsonburg served tough and we were not up to the challenge with our passing tonight,” Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay said. “We had almost as many serve receive errors as we had serve receive to target, which is not typical for us.”

Sheffield made a big lineup switch for this match as well. Lemay moved Lynzie Grubbs from middle hitter to outside and sent Emily Leichtenberger from outside to middle.

“This meant that Lynzie had to serve, serve receive and play defense, which she hasn’t done in a long time,” Lemay said. “She played well. I’m pleased that the girls are willing to accept other/alternate assignments on the court. It’s what being a team player is all about.”

Leichtenberger finished with nine kills, while Megan Johnson added 14 assists and Annabel Sheldon had eight digs.

Johnsonburg won the junior varsity match 25-17 and 25-14.

Ana McCracken had five kills and Lexi Goldthwaite had six assists in the loss.

Sheffield wraps up its road trip Tuesday at Bradford.

“The travel starts to get to you,” Lemay said. “We have another away game Tuesday before starting a string of four home games. They have homecoming this weekend, so they can have fun, unwind and be ready to go Monday at practice.”
