Warren girls battle to tie with Harbor Creek
Warren’s girls soccer team hit the road Saturday for a tough non-region match with Harbor Creek and battled the Huskies to a 2-2 tie.
Both teams are currently in second place in their respective regions. The Dragons were without senior midfielder Brooklyn Neurieter due to injury, and lost prolific scorer Kyra Wotorson to a yellow card in the first overtime.
“We are super proud of the girls, it was a war out there today,” Warren coach Jeremy Bickling said. “I think every girl got knocked down, bruised and has turf burns.”
Harbor Creek (7-1-2) opened the scoring with a first half goal. Warren (8-3-1) got the equalizer quickly when freshman Lauren Anderson put in her first career varsity goal off an assist from Mikaala Deppen.
“Lauren Anderson and Audrey Smith stepped up today,” Bickling said. “They played a full JV game prior to the varsity game and gave us big minutes and effort.”
Less than five minutes later, Wotorson gave the Dragons the lead off an assist from MJ Fadale and Warren took the 2-1 lead into the half.
Harbor Creek scored early in the second half to knot it at 2-2.
Wotorson picked up a yellow during the first 10-minute overtime due to accumulated fouls and was forced out of the contest for five minutes.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net through two overtime periods and the match ended in a 2-2 tie.
“This game was not a must win, “Bickling said. “It allowed us a chance to work on a different formations to manage not having Brook on the field. That said, I think the girls learned today that, regardless of the circumstances, they can hang with the best teams. Our three losses have come from two teams (McDowell and General McLane) with a total of two losses between them. We are happy with where we are at heading into October .”
That October schedule begins today when the Dragons head to Franklin for a Region 6 contest.
