Lady Knights roll past Kennedy Catholic, into District 10 semis

Eisenhower’s Leah Peterson fires a shot after she outruns Kennedy Catholic’s Grace Shultz during the first half of their D-10 Class 1A quarterfinal game at Dollinger Field on Tuesday. The goal was the first of the game and the first of three for Peterson, as the Lady Knights rolled to a 10-0 win.

ERIE, Pa. – Early-game jitters for the Eisenhower girls soccer team against Kennedy Catholic gave way to a party-like atmosphere by the time the clock reached all zeros.

That’s what happens when you score 10 goals in a playoff game.

The Lady Knights looked every bit the part of a District 10 title contender on Tuesday, routing the Golden Eagles 10-0 in their Class 1A quarterfinal contest at Dollinger Field at the Hagerty Family Events Center.

“There were a lot of girls that already knew what to expect and came in with a positive attitude,” said Eisenhower coach Diana Elmquist, speaking to her squad’s playoff experience. “Even though they still had the jitters, they were able to get them under control quick.”

That might be an understatement.

Eisenhower senior Caroline Smelko fires a shot for one of her two goals.

Freshman Cassie Smelko scored four goals, Leah Peterson there, Caroline Smelko two and Madison Mohney the other in what was a dominant offensive display.

The first five minutes Eisenhower ‘s (11-5-2) nerves showed, but after that, it was all attack, all the time.

Peterson got the party started in the 8th minute to get EHS on the board, and the onslaught was on.

Cassie Smelko followed with a goal exactly 16 minutes in to make it 2-0, and just over seven minutes later played a perfect pass from her older sister Caroline for her second goal of the half.

With 7:24 remaining in the half, Peterson fired a shot from the right side that KC keeper Ginna Lepore slid to try and stop, but carried just across the goalmouth for a 4-0 advantage.

Eisenhower’s Madison Mohney control the ball in the open field during Tuesday’s D-10 Class 1A quarterfinal game against Kennedy Catholic. Mohney netted a goal in the 10-0 victory.

The score only told part of the story, however, as the passing, spacing and movement were all there for the Knights.

“They’ve been working so hard,” Elmquist said of her team. “The ball control was just great today and I’m just so excited for them. I was happy with their movement and just the way they were working together.”

Peterson started off the second half much like she did the first, netting her third goal of the game, the hat trick making it 5-0.

Seven minutes later in the 59th minute, the Smelko sisters were at it again, as Caroline played another pin-point pass to Cassie who buried the ball in the back of the net.

Eisenhower continued to press the issue, and Madison Mohney scored with 13:33 to go to make it 7-0.

Eisenhower's Caroline Smelko (17) celebrates with her sister, Cassie (28) and teammate Leah Peterson (16) following a goal.

That was followed by another barrage from the Smelko sisters, as Cassie scored twice more with senior defender Rachel Frederick garnering an assist, and Caroline adding her second with 4:15 remaining to cap the scoring.

The defensive group, led by Frederick, Ava Nizzi, Hope Hefright, Ellie Strausser and keeper Faith Johnson were stout, quickly shutting down the few offensive attacks that Kennedy Catholic was able to muster.

Katie Elmquist, Elley Eastman, Mohney and Lily Mueller were great in the midfield as well.

The atmosphere on the sideline was jovial, as the younger players on the Lady Knights saw plenty of action in the second half.

It was truly a total team effort.

“They are all for each other,” Elmquist said of her team. “They work together and support each other and they’re just a great group. We did a lot of team-building at the beginning of the year and they just enjoy each other. It’s fun. I love practices. They’re great.”

With the win, they will face a familiar foe – the Mercer Mustangs, a 3-2 winner over Seneca.

Eisenhower knocked Mercer out of the playoffs in 2017 and the Mustangs returned the favor last season.

The two teams met once this season, a 1-1 draw back on Sept. 14.

On the other half of the bracket, Iroquois stunned Wilmington, 2-1, and Cambridge Springs toppled Maplewood, 4-0.

“It’s exciting to see all of the different teams, with some upsets happening and things like that,” noted Elmquist. “We talked about it on the bus on the way here, we really aren’t concerned with who we get. We feel like we can compete with any of the teams that we’ll be up against.”
