Lady Knights earn win over Kane

Senior Night for the Eisenhower Lady Knights soccer team couldn’t have gone better as they came away with a 3-1 win over the Kane Wolves.

The Knights came out hard early, possessing the ball the majority of the half and sending shot after shot at the Kane keeper, who came up with big save after big save until Cassie Smelko finally broke through in the 25th minute. Smelko came crashing in on a corner heading the ball to the right side of the goal and giving sister Caroline Smelko her first of two assists on the night.

Eisenhower continued to possess and dominate play until a Kane forward shot and scored on a mishandled ball with four minutes to play. The game went into half tied 1-1.

The second half was much of the same from Eisenhower. They continued to test the Kane goalie and finally scored goal number two when freshman Elley Eastman dribbled through the defense and scored her first career varsity goal.

The Eisenhower defense continued to stand tall, anchored by strong play from Hope Hefright and Rachel Frederick. They thwarted any Kane attacks, holding them to few shots in the second half.

Finally, in the 78th minute, Katie Elmquist finished on a Caroline Smelko shot that rang off the crossbar. Similar to Eastman, Elmquist’s goal was the first of her varsity career.

“It was nice to see us dominate possession and come out on top for senior night,” said Eisenhower coach Diana Elmquist.

“All the seniors made their presence known tonight as they built forward as a team allowing us to record 24 shots on goal. We are hoping to keep the goal scoring and strong possession going as we enter the final games of the regular season.”

The Knights are back in action Saturday away at Port Allegany.
