Lady Dragons topple Hickory

Warren’s Sawyer Mohney fires a pass past Hickory’s Kylie Thompson during the first half of their match at War Memorial Field, Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019. Mohney had a goal and the Dragons shutout the Hornets, 2-0.

Following last Thursday’s match with Meadville, Warren girls soccer coach Jeremy Bickling said his team was “still figuring out what works,” as they deal with a slew of injuries.

The Dragons seemed to have figured it out late in the second half of Tuesday’s match with Hickory. Jessica Susz and Sawyer Mohney scored in a span of 1:12 to send the Dragons to a 2-0 shutout over the Hornets at War Memorial Field.

“Sawyer had a huge game,” Bickling said. “Having her back healthy and at center-mid really allows her to influence the game.”

Despite controlling possession for most of the match, Warren (12-4-1 overall, 11-3 Region 6) was unable to solve freshman keeper Daisy Rust.

With 17:33 to go in the match, the Dragons got a corner kick. Georgie Bickling took the corner and got it to Ella Ordiway. Ordiway’s header was blocked, but the rebound came to Susz who headed it in to give Warren a 1-0 lead.

Warren’s Ella Ordiway (23) heads the ball towards the Hickory goal during their match at War Memorial Field, Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019. Ordiway’s shot created a rebound that led to the opening goal in a 2-0 Dragons win over the Hornets.

“I wasn’t happy at halftime,” Jeremy Bickling said. “I asked the seniors to pick it up and Jess did that.”

Just over a minute later, Mohney doubled the lead. The Dragons got a shot away, but it hit the crossbar. The rebound went right to Mohney who fired top shelf for the 2-0 score.

“Having Sawyer at center allows us to play Kyra (Wotorson) out wider and create offense,” coach Bickling said.

Early in the match, Warren got some runs deep into Hickory (7-10, 7-7) territory but couldn’t get clear shots away until late in the half.

With 11:30 to play in the first half, the Dragons were scrambling to get a shot away. A bouncing ball found its way to Georgie Bickling’s foot. She had an open net in front of her, but pushed the ball past the goal mouth wide and the teams went into the half knotted at 0-0.

Sixteen minutes into the second half, Georgie Bickling got a shot off that hit the right post. The ball bounced back to the left near a pair of Dragons but neither were able to square up and the ball skittered past the left post and out of play.

Three minutes later, Warren had another quality scoring chance. Audrey Smith sent a crossing pass to Wotorson on the left side. Wotorson’s shot hit the crossbar and bounced out. Georgie Bickling caught the rebound with a head, but the shot sailed over the crossbar and out.

Hickory got a pair of scoring chances late in the contest.

With just under seven minutes to go, Santina Masters came free in the middle and fired a shot that went just over the crossbar. With three minutes to play, a Hornets indirect kick found its way to the goal but Warren keeper Alyssa Anderson knocked down the loose ball and fell on it to preserve the shutout.

Warren hosts Corry Thursday for the final match of the regular season.
