Errors cost Sheffield at Ridgway

RIDGWAY, Pa. – Mistakes proved costly for the Sheffield volleyball team Monday night.

The Wolverines committed 40 unforced errors and ultimately lost in four at Ridgway, 26-24, 25-16, 20-25 and 25-22. Despite the errors, Sheffield still put itself in position to win the match.

“Our problem tonight was unforced errors,” Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay said. “We gave them 40 of the 76 points they needed to win tonight. Had we only had half that many, this could have been a win for us.”

It was on the offensive where the Wolverines hurt themselves most with 28 hitting errors and 12 service errors.

Still, Lemay was able to take positives away from the match.

“I was pleased that they were able to take the third set after losing the first two,” she said. “It shows me that there was still fight in them.”

The first and fourth sets were back-and-forth battles the Wolverines came up just short in.

“They fought until the end,” Lemay said. “They are learning to battle and not immediately get down on themselves.”

Marissa Grubbs had 31 digs to lead the Wolverines defensively. Annabel Sheldon had 19 digs and Megan Johnson had 20 assists.

Sheldon led the offensive attack with nine kills and Emily Leichtenberger added six kills. Lynzie Grubbs had a big night at the net with five blocks.

Ridgway won the junior varsity match, 25-11 and 25-20.

Sheffield heads north tonight for a cross-county match with Eisenhower.
