Eisenhower hits the road to take on talented Reynolds squad

To walk off the field at Reynolds Stadium with a win tonight, Eisenhower will have to find a way to do something it hasn’t done particularly well all season.

Stop the run.

The Knights (2-4), fresh off a thrilling 29-27 comeback win at Cambridge Springs, did a good job stopping the run last week. They held the Blue Devils to just 112 yards on the ground. In Eisenhower’s first win of the year against Saegertown, the Knights limited the Panthers to 113 rushing yards.

In their four losses, the Knights are giving up an average of 273.75 rushing yards. Only Mercer in Week 3 was held under 200 yards (173), while West Middlesex, Union City and Northwestern all went for 250-plus.

The Raiders (5-1) have been running, quite literally, roughshod over their opponents. Reynolds is averaging 287.5 rushing yards per game as a team.

Reynolds started the year 4-0 with wins over Union City (41-0), Slippery Rock (25-21), Saegertown (61-6) and Mercer (40-13). The Raiders’ only blemish thus far is a 25-14 setback at Maplewood, but they bounced back from that with a 28-14 win at West Middlesex last week.

Junior Cole Toy leads the backfield with 87 carries for 770 yards (8.9 ypc) and nine touchdowns. He’s fifth in all of District 10 in rushing yards, and tied for third in touchdowns. Senior Sean O’Hara has been solid when spelling Toy with 74 runs for 452 yards (6.1 ypc) and five scores. Senior quarterback Bryce McCloskey has 49 carries for 210 yards (4.3 ypc) and four scores.

McCloskey hasn’t gone to the air often this season, only 9.3 attempts per game, but he’s been effective when he does. McCloskey has a 69.6 completion percentage with 609 yards and six touchdowns with just one interception. O’Hara (14 receptions, 180 yards and two touchdowns) and Toy (nine catches, 94 yards) are the leading receivers.

Toy also serves as the Raiders’ leading tackler. He’s racked up 83 stops on the year (13.8 per game) with four tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.

Eisenhower quarterback Owen Trumbull moved up the D-10 leaderboards after his 17-29, 217-yard performance at Cambridge Springs last week. He currently sits third in completions (84-130), seventh in yards (982) and tied for seventh in touchdowns (8). Dillon Benson has had a breakout season of his own and now sits third in D-10 in receiving yards with 601 (just 46 behind Franklin’s Cade Adams), fourth in receptions (38) and tied for fourth in receiving scores (6).

Zane Alexander leads the Knights backfield with 80 carries for 340 yards (4.3 ypc) and four touchdowns. Cael Black has run 50 times for 211 yards (4.2 ypc), while Trumbull has taken off 30 times for 117 yards (3.9 ypc) and three scores. Alexander also has 23 receptions for 167 yards and a score.

Kickoff for tonight’s region crossover contest is set for 7 p.m.
